Pastor Jason’s message last Sunday focused on our identity. That identity includes a wide range of things like life experiences, opportunities, employment relationships, avocational interests and so much more. Our spiritual and natural gifts also affect our calling and identity. And he rightfully noted that our identity directs and influences our activities. Who we are, truly affects what we do.
I read about a guy who had a job that he hated. But it paid well, and his current circumstances didn’t leave much room for another choice. So instead of grumbling every day, he decided to focus on his attitude. He got a couple of 3 by 5 cards and wrote these words on them: “This is not my life. This is my job. Christ is my life.” Every time he opened his desk, he saw those words and reminded his heart of the position and calling he held in the Lord.
Suddenly even the most mundane tasks can have great worth and value if they are being done for the Lord.
Each of us have been given a set of gifts (natural and spiritual) and a calling. The calling is not a job, but rather it is a purpose of God to fulfill a specific task. Doing the bidding of God can and should take place in any context. A leader leads in all situations. A teacher teaches regardless of the age of his/her students. A Preacher will preach to thousands or maybe just four seniors in an old folk’s home.
If you have a calling to serve, you should be looking around every corner for an opportunity to serve; it doesn’t really matter what the tasks are or who benefits. If we are called to serve, we serve.
So, this next week, maybe all of us can commit some time to really think through our identity. Let’s revel in our position in Christ. Let’s remember that we have been bought with a price, redeemed and set free. Let’s remember that our adoption makes Christ our brother. And let’s remember that our sins are forgiven.
Let’s start that renewed relationship with obedience to Jesus. Let’s grow in grace as we partner with Him to build up the body of Christ and bring Him glory.
Remember, we are valued and secure; not because of what we do for him, but rather because we are precious, worthy and loved by Him.
